Phil loves to eat to his fill, albeit he can still carry his own weight, literally and figuratively. There is a practical understanding between his appetite for knowledge and food, to woo him but also satisfy him. But it’s his appetite for knowledge that weaned him into a PR major. His days at Uganda Christian University were painful but fruitful. Philip left the Mukono based University heavier, not from food alone but also from a degree in Mass communication. A geek by virtue of his looks and self-admission; however, behind the thick lens resides a cheeky, goofy and witty bloke. Philip accosts strangers with an intrinsic sense of humor (even if the humor is not there in a joke he will laugh at the fact that the humor is not there) and oftentimes he talks himself into a pickle, only to exit the same way he got there - the man loves to talk but never lets his tongue run faster than his brain. Phil is a normal human being and because of that the man divorced poverty even before it proposed to him, yielding a remarkable sense of self-drive and evaluation; a principle he admits defines him today. Aside from his food, Philip values time and would never waste either, that’s why he is irked by people who can’t keep time.
Born Stella Mpora, until 12 years ago when she was betrothed and became Stella Mpora Khan! Stella is a doting mother of one and loving wife. But her life didn’t start when she became a mother and a wife. Stella holds an Arts Degree from Makerere University in Administrative law and literature which have precipitated her leadership skills and communication abilities. She is a born leader, although she would not admit to it upon first pry. However, she didn’t get to the helm at MAAD just fwaaah! Stella has danced to the tune of hard work and hasn’t known anything else. Stella started her advertising career as a junior Account Executive at Lowe Scanad Uganda in early 2002 where she managed global accounts like Coca Cola, Unilever, Bank of Baroda and Celtel (now Airtel)! Stella brings a 13 year long wealth of experience garnered from shaping some of the biggest brands in Uganda. Her tenures at some of the most revered advertising agencies saw her elevate to the stratosphere of advertising. She has been part of the team that has developed and implemented great strategy and memorable communication campaigns that have democratised telephony in Uganda resulting in MTN’s growth to become the leading telecommunications provider in Uganda. In 2011, she was one of the 5 start-up members that South African Based Creative hotshots Metropolitan Republic selected to start up an Agency in Uganda. Her role was no easy fete; tasked to set up a PR and BTL department in 2012; Stella led her team to win new PR and BTL businesses and retaining it. These included Google Uganda, MTN Uganda, VIVO Energy Uganda, Uganda Waragi and UHMG. Over this period, Stella has obtained experience in Strategy, Brand Communication, Social Marketing, Finance, Billing, PR, BTL Advertising and Resource Management. Suffice to say, she has brought a lot more to MAAD since she joined. Whereas Stella exudes a unique work ethic, her zeal for life outside work can’t be ignored. She always finds time to channel more of her creativity through cooking and baking.
Joshua, also known to his peers as Josh exudes the traits of a pit bull with the conviction of a woodpecker. His industry and vigilance in executing his duties rank him high in the client service domain.
But like many Ugandans Josh attended Makerere University. Three years later, at the prime of his youth he left University with a limp of satisfaction and a degree in Environmental management by his hip. It would seem that degree was a tasteless victory for Josh, so he is pursuing a postgraduate diploma in marketing at the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
The self-aware introvert that he is, Joshua rarely speaks about himself. However, the good folks at Post Bank, International Criminal Court and Uganda Commodity exchange speak highly of him and envy MAAD for acquiring such an asset.
Josh is no stranger to the advertising game, he has stroked organizations like AFFORD/UHMG, PSI/PACE, Medical Access and International Labor Organization with his brilliance.
If he is not on MAAD duty he is buried neck deep into a thriller novel or away doing charity work. When he is done toiling, Josh replenishes his energy with rice, peas and chapatti on the side.
Two things hit you when you meet Benjamin Bicung, his towering height and sharp fashion style. He is always dressed like he is going to the white house. When you’re done bashing into his two most obvious qualities, then a breeze of the cool, calm and collected Account executive will greet you. Getting words out of him is like milking a rat, his words are like blood diamonds, they only come out when it’s a matter of the client’s satisfaction or a matter of business preservation - talk sense or walk away! With a degree in Business Administration and Management from Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi, Benji’s hunger for information and resolve to know a little bit about everything are the force that dim his lights when he goes to bed and light up his mornings every day. His passion for marketing has a hold on him, one a career in Advertising only numbs. His sense of style is not limited to fashion; Benji works smart and brings to the MAAD Client service department a unique adrenaline it has sought for many moons now. With some experience in the banking sector, Benji has honed his people skills, veiling himself with an aura that makes him easy to communicate and deal with. His height has brought him perks with the ladies but those he revels in most are while he is on court playing basketball. So when he is not keeping clients happy, he is shooting hoops.
At first glance of Byaruhanga Joseph, before you even meet his business side, you are greeted by his silver tongue. Byaru will tease you with his fuzzy and warm talk to me personality. By his own admission he is the stranger you will not forget, a friend you want to keep, and the Media Executive to have in your corner. An optimist by choice, a smooth talker by default and negotiator by trait, Byaru can get away with anything but won’t let people get away with sloppy work on his watch- talk about ironies! It’s alleged that he talked his way into Business school at Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi and graduated, Byaru could neither deny nor confirm this! However, what’s obvious is his vast knowledge in marketing spheres coupled with a unique prospectus in solving marketing dismals. Prior to his addition into the MAAD family, Byaru worked with Baroque Publishing but has since amassed chunks of experience from working on accounts such as Jesa Farm Dairy, Malaria Consortium, Stop Malaria, CHC and Orange. If he is not supporting rugby, he pretending to play it, scram half and fly half are his supposed favoured positions. But if he is not playing make believe rugby, he is making tries for his clients on the different media platforms.
Faizal is a good listener. Energetic and amiable, he relates to people at all levels. He monitors media with the eye of a hawk. Fai accomplishes his tasks with an amiable disposition, and seems as if he was made for the tumultuous world of media. He has gathered plentiful experience from working on brands, like Orange Uganda, GOtv Uganda, Tropical Bank, and social marketing projects, such as Stop Malaria Project, Malaria Consortium and CHC. When he is not making endless calls to Media Houses, Fai is inspecting his Agricultural projects. He loves Agriculture. I guess this explains why he holds a bachelors’ degree in Agribusiness, from Makerere University. Fai loves meeting new people, reading books, watching documentaries and traveling.
Miriam’s job is to make sure what we focus on is delivering outcomes not outputs! She has over 10 years of experience in advertising. She first worked for Scanad (Ug) in the creative department and later at Adapt TBWA(QG Saatchi & Saatchi) as the head of client service. She also has over 8 years of telecom marketing experience, gathered from working on the MTN account in Uganda, as Brand manager Uganda Telecom and the Marketing manager Corporate Brand—Warid Telecom Uganda. Her most recent job is the Program Director for the East African Film Labs, where she managed Maisha programs in Kenya, Uganda Tanzania and Rwanda.
Armed with a major in graphic Design and painting, Mike joined Graphic Systems (U) Limited, moved to Coolgraphix, then to Ignition Limited and finally found his home in MAAD Limited. As a graphic Designer and Pre-press Manager, his journey has seen him work with companies like Capital Markets Authority, Uganda Securities Exchange, Allied Bank (now Bank of Africa), National Insurance Corporation and Alexander Forbes. As Production Manager, he has added exceptional quality to the agency’s long list of attributes. He has expertly handled production for clients, such as Orange Uganda, Tropical Bank, KCCA, Bank of Africa, Warid Telecom – Uganda, among many others. Mike has the tendency to grab ideas that seem harmless and then mix them up until they just surrender and come to life. He has an unusual way of containing pressure.
When you enter MAAD offices, the first thing your eyes meet is a warm smile from a young, pretty lady. Her name is Joyce Nabweteme, our Front Desk Manager. Her welcoming smile and gentle voice make you forget you’re in a new place. Joyce talks to you as though she has known you for years. She listens to you, of course with a smile, no matter the jam at her desk. A holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Office & Information Management from Makerere, Joyce executes her duties with expertise and love. When she is not making MAAD visitors feel at home, she listens to soul & gospel music, travels and watches soccer, especially when her favorite team (Man Utd) is playing. She claims she is a great cook, but we can’t independently verify this claim. We have never tasted her meal. Here is a one-sentence description that can genuinely tell you who Joyce is: highly motivated, cooperative, gentle, ambitious, self-driven, fast learner and—above all—God fearing.
Katugume Johnson (aka JJ) is a fresh and growing Industrial designer with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial design and Fine Arts from Makerere University School of Industrial and Fine Arts.
If there is anyone who mastered “the think before you act” saying, it’s JJ. Johnson takes his time, ponders like a scientist in a lab, and contemplates like a super soccer coach, before he reacts to a brief.
Here is what you hear when you ask JJ why he is in advertising “I don’t do designing and illustrating as jobs. They’re part of me. Designing and illustrating are fun to me. I will design for as long as I am alive.” You can see the guy is driven by passion. It’s this passion that has enabled him to craft amazing campaigns for brands, like Orange Uganda, Bank of Africa, KCCA, among others.
Considering the immense passion this guy has for advertising, it would be hard to imagine that he is as passionate about something else. JJ loves Basketball. He plays it. He supports it. He lives it.
Call him weird if you wish. But he would give his life for Arsenal. He claims it’s the only “real” football club in the football world.
Adonia says he spoke before he even started breastfeeding. That’s when his parents knew words would be his wow effect and ultimate X-factor. But, if the above statement should stand, then bear in mind it stands on quick sand. He says instead of blood, words flow in his veins, partly, owing to a family of writers and admirers of literature. He strives to live up to the legacy of his ancestors and so far he feels he has made headway. He has written for Kampala’s most revered tabloids, The Kampala Sun and Sunday vision. He had a brief engagement with the Daily Monitor. The only thing that would rival writing is doing sports, which he has successfully managed to keep in the co driver’s seat. He has a mysterious aura that borders rogue. He says is part of his charm; charm that only comes out during a brainstorm.
Patience Aguti (aka Pesh) speaks with flair and poise, kind of like Michele Obama. Even in vernacular, the poise is distinctive. Rumor has it she is royalty but because she is MAAD, all that is of little note to her. She is passionate about cooking. Those who have tasted her cooking in all senses conceivable, say it’s riveting and addictive. She, however, insists her culinary arts are surmounted by her love for kids and her unquenchable thirst to make lasting human connections. On a more serious note, Pesh is explosive about her sleep and promises to shred anything or anyone with the intention to come in between her and her sleep. She is friendly. She occasionally dishes smiles just to show off. Pesh will move mountains, if that’s what it takes, to execute her assignments.
Armed with a diploma in accounting from Buganda Royal Institute of Business and Technical Education, Hawa is a no-nonsense business lady. Since her entry into Maad, she has equipped herself with all the skills necessary for her to be at the top of her game. She has worked on brands, such as Warid Telecom-Uganda, GOtv Uganda, Orange Uganda, East African Cables, Tropical Bank, Victoria University, Bank of Africa, among others. A good day will find her listening to music and chatting with friends and workmates. You will want to stay away on a day she’s having a fight with the calculator.
Robert Mukobe Joab has a 9-year-rich media experience, garnered through working on brands like Orange Uganda, GOtv Uganda, MTN Uganda, Bank of Africa, Stanbic Bank Uganda, Uganda Wildlife Authority, SAMSUNG, Colgate Palmolive and projects like Stop Malaria Project, Save the Children International – Uganda, HCP –Safe Male Circumcision, AFFORD and many others. A graduate of Makerere University Business School, Robert worked as a General Manager at Radio Kiira, then as a Media Executive and later a Media Planner at SAATCHI & SAATCHI before getting Maad—I mean joining the MAAD team. Robert is a health freak. He always finds a moment to work out even if it’s past 11PM after sorting out endless schedules.
Aggrey (aka Stoic) is a Drama graduate from Makerere University. He is supposed to be on stage with some comedy group making people laugh, or doing karaoke in bars, but his passion for communication drove him to MAAD. He prioritized copywriting over acting and singing for one, simple reason: copywriting has an enormous room for imagination. Crafting ads is not a job to him. It’s a fun-filled, challenging game, he loves playing. He has had fun with brands, such as Orange Uganda, GOtv Uganda, Tropical Bank, KCCA, East African Cables, Rotary Uganda, among others, and social marketing projects, like Stop Malaria Project. He is quiet at first sight. But give him a second; pay him attention. He’ll explode. He’ll flare up. He’ll get animated. He’ll act. He’ll sing!
Dennis is the classic example of a silent burner. When you first meet him, it is hard to imagine that he has a crazy sense of humor. He only surfaces to deliver hilarious quips, after which he retreats back to his shell to brew ideas.
A graduate from Makerere’s school of Arts, Dennis is crazy about design. He has unleashed his craziness and passion onto brands, like Orange Uganda, GOtv Uganda, KCCA, Nomi, Meditex Soap, Tropical Bank, EzeeMoney, Bank of Africa, Rotary Uganda, Cayenne Bar and Restaurant, among others.
He doesn’t stop working until he is fully satisfied, meaning he is usually one of the last people to leave office. When he isn’t hunkered over a computer, he enjoys movies, soccer and comedy.
When asked what things he loves, he says, “Life, humor and my career.”
Bentley is a passionate, enthusiastic and versatile player of the MAAD creative team. He graduated from the Makerere University School of Industrial and Fine Arts, where he majored in Drawing Special and Advertising Design. He then fine-tuned his talent with companies like EABW, Real Marketing (Uganda and Rwanda) handling brands like Letshego, UWA, Global Trust Bank, RBC and SONARWA. Working on brands, like GOtv Uganda, Orange Uganda, KCCA, EMDI, and many others, has seen his wealth of experience grow to greater heights. His style of design can be described as clean, snazzy and effective. The same elements can be traced in his dress code, too. He loves color, music, soccer and dancing. He also dabbles in photography. For a double shot of fun and brilliance, look no further.
This open minded dude has a real passion for visual arts and design. This helps him develop kick-ass concepts and define his style. The fact that he aced his major course in Advertising design at Makerere University’s School of Industrial and Fine Art with a top score, supports his belief that advertising is his creative home. Over the past years, Gerald has garnered plenty advertising experience from working on brands, such as New Vision, Orange Uganda, Warid Telecom – Uganda, Bank of Africa, Post Bank, and many others. He recently walked a lady down the aisle, and we don’t think it is a coincidence that she happens to be a nutritionist. We’d say that he was guided by his passion for good food but we won’t. He's such an athletic guy that nobody at MAAD can outrun him.
Adris possesses rich advertising expertise, harvested over decades of intense work with advertising agencies like QG Saatchi & Saatchi, Carmichael Lynch, BBDO Minneapolis, Creative Communications Rwanda, and working on brands, such as Harley Davidson, Porsche, Orange Uganda, MTN Uganda, Warid Telecom – Uganda, GOtv Uganda, Bank of Africa, KCCA, Standard Chartered Bank, New Vision, among others. An alumnus of the School of Industrial and Fine Arts in Makerere University and Miami Ad School, Adris has done amazing ads, some of which have appeared in the One Show. Prior to joining MAAD as a Creative Director, he was Associate Creative Director at Creative Communications Rwanda, an affiliate of Grey Worldwide. Under AK’s leadership, MAAD has become a much-revered agency. His eye for perfection has made MAAD flourish and grow.
At first, all Janet was willing to reveal is that she has played basketball for the last 15 years. When we began to suspect that she is a spy, she opened up a bit more. Janet is a no-nonsense client service executive with 5 years of service at Warid Telecom – Uganda under her belt. She is known in these parts as “Fire Brigade” as she is great at defusing crises and restoring order. With such expertise, she has handled brands, such as Orange Uganda, Bank of Africa and social marketing projects, like Stop Malaria Project. She loves to catch a good movie. Janet is a dedicated Christian who volunteers at Watoto Church. She’s dedicated to her basketball team (yep, she’s a coach), friends and family
Her ever-ready smile brings liveliness into every space and has turned some of our toughest clients into warm and fuzzy colleagues. With so many hobbies, it would probably take all day for us to exhaustively list them. However, being MAAD about challenges, we shall try. She is crazy about the dance floor, food, movies and books. Sharon loves African prints, colors, with a hidden passion for photography, nature, fun, romance and a great zeal for life. Her eccentric soul is definitely right at home at MAAD, where she has worked with brands, such as Tropical Bank, Mukwano Group, New Vision, Cayenne, Cure Africa, and Rotary, to mention but a few. Best of all, she loves charity work. She has done loads of it.
Dorothy is passionate about Marketing, Communication and Customer Care. There is nothing in the world a client can do to sweep away Dora’s smile. She takes the phone gracefully and talks to the client soothingly. Before you know it, the client who was fuming, will be in “it is okay”, “I understand”. Maybe this is because she is open-minded and has interacted with a good number of different people, from the various brands like Orange Uganda, GOtv Uganda, Crown Beverages Ltd, Save the Children Uganda, Expanding Social Protection – Uganda, National Social Security Fund, among others, that she has worked on. Dorothy graduated with a BA degree in Media, Communication and Languages at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. She is currently pursuing a Diploma in Marketing at the Chartered Institute of Marketing UK. She loves swimming, reading, sleeping and writing. When she’s not at work, you will most likely catch her watching anime; the likes of Naruto, Fairytale and Bleach.
George has a rich background in accounting spanning several years. He is efficient and carries his duties out with surgical precision.
A Commerce & Accounting graduate from Makerere University, he has 10 years of career exposure that have seen him rise from Accounts Assistant to Finance Manager.
George’s expertise has been seasoned by thorough work on brands, like Orange Uganda, GOtv Uganda, Warid Telecom – Uganda, McCann Erickson World Wide, Coca-Cola, East African Breweries, Bank of Africa, Celtel, Johnson & Johnson, Gillette, Nescafe, Western Union, Standard Chartered Bank, and many others.
His Human Resource and Crisis Management abilities ensure that he is always in control, even when the going gets tough.
Job has been honing his artistic skill before he could say, "Maama!" After a degree in Industrial and Fine Arts with a major in advertising design, he worked in Repro-house Ltd Nairobi where he got exposure to Kenya’s advertising and design industry. He participated in the Nokia Only planet project, which schooled him in market research, concept and product development. At MAAD, he has brought his energy and creative prowess to brands like Orange Uganda, GOtv Uganda, Warid Telecom – Uganda, Tropical Bank, Victoria University, and many more. When away from the above woloks, he busies himself with digital photography and kitchen business. If we were to describe him in one sentence, it would be: A people loving, out-of-the-box guy who is in love with art, pastries and God.
Solomon, also known as the RnB Phantom, is the closest MAAD has ever had to a Rasta. He haunted Uganda’s education system until it gave him a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial and Fine Arts from Makerere University. He shared his creativity with companies like Packaging Technologies, Insight Media, Global Sounds and has crafted attention-grabbing campaigns for brands, like Warid Telecom-Uganda, Mukwano Petroleum jelly, Post Bank, Opportunity Bank, New Vision, Digida FM, Cure Africa, and many others. He goes about his work silently. You’ll only hear his voice when he’s crooning at you from your television or earphones, accompanied by instruments and queen/king dancers as he is a musician. He is aggressive when it comes to bringing ideas to life and loves adventure.
